"...I know the plans and thoughts that I have for you,’ says the LORD, ‘plans for peace and well-being and not for disaster, to give you a future and

a hope.” Jer. 29:11 Amp

On the first Monday of the year I contemplate the meaning and purpose of this year. May I reflect with you 2021’s significance and ask you about your thoughts?

In the Bible the number twenty-one symbolizes wickedness, rebellion, and sin. After the children of Israel were delivered from Egyptian bondage they had 21 major rebellious events as they traveled through the wilderness.

The meaning of twenty-one in the Bible is an outgrowth of thirteen. Adding thirteen (sinfulness) and eight (symbolizing a new beginning) gives us twenty-one or a number that represents beginning a new level or effort that is sinful and disobedient against God. Is that a dynamic for us in 2021?

Yet, on the last day of God's seven-day Spring festival, the 21st of the month of Nisan, God carried out his last judgment on the Egyptians drowning Pharaoh and his entire army in the Red Sea. Is there deliverance from the enemy’s threats in 2021?

Wait, there is more...

The books of 1st Kings and 2nd Kings mention the sins of Jeroboam (the first king of the Northern Tribes of Israel after their split with Judah) twenty-one times. They show how Israel continued to disobey God even though He gave them plenty of time to repent. Jeroboam erected golden calves in Bethel (House of God) for the people to worship to keep them from going to the temple in Jerusalem. He undermined the worship, and morals, of Israel. His title was “the one who made Israel sin."

Perhaps there are some battles we still need to fight in 2021, since Satan’s devastating attacks in 2020. Are there things we need to take care of? Is there disobedience among God’s people? If my people will humble themselves, pray and seek My face... I will heal their land. Will we repent and seek His will and obey?

2020 was the Hebrew year of 5780 meaning “to speak, to blow, word, speech, or breath.” It is by our words that things change. What we declare and what we speak out of our hearts becomes reality. Interesting the enemy silenced our words by isolation, the masking of our mouths, and even death in 2020. It was a year of verbal contention, foul-mouthed, angry social media, fake news, deception and lies. Our mouths corrupted our culture.

2021 in Hebrew years is 5781. Eighty is the letter “pay" and one is “aleph." It is still a year of “to speak, to blow, word, speech, breath" but added to that “aleph” meaning master, school of learning, teacher, and wondrous.”

So in 2021 I desire to not only improve how I think, but what I speak. I will master my mouth. 2021 might be a school for us - a year of learning. Will this year be a master teacher instructing us in the Biblical and practical? Will we learn?

Finally, the meaning of this year in the Hebrew calendar is wondrous. Could this year lead us to the Wondrous, the Mysterious and the Transcendent One? Perhaps in this next season we will see the Lord higher and more lifted up. I know I desire a closer connection and a closer walk with our Lord and Master Jesus Christ.

The meaning of 2021 may seem negative but God is good and wants what is best for us as His sons and daughters. He said, "So there is hope for your future, declares the Lord." (Jer 31:17) Despite the enemy's onslaught, God has good things for you. It may not be comfortable but it is for your growth and development.

How does this speak to you? What are your thoughts about 2021? What is God saying to you?
