You are my hiding place; You shall preserve me from trouble; You shall surround me with songs of deliverance. Psalm 32:7

The thought that God surrounds us with songs is difficult to comprehend. These songs are a “surround sound” not only of proclamations about God delivering us, but they are the cause that brings the effect of God’s mighty deliverance.

Jack Hayford said, “Deliverance” is one of the giant words of the Scriptures. It is a broadly inclusive term which describes: (1) forgiveness of sin, (2) redemption from eternal death, (3) recovery of physical health, (4) release from spiritual bondage, and (5) rescue from difficult situations. As our Savior, Jesus has become our Deliverer. The essence of the meaning of salvation is deliverance."

So, when we read of “songs of deliverance,” we may tune our souls to the promise and potential of such power being put on human lips. The scripture says, You surround (encompass, go or march, around, encircle) me with songs (cries) of deliverance (salvation).

There are several possible meanings to "you surround me with songs of deliverance."

  1. God Himself marches around us proclaiming in song His salvation. He encircles us with songs He sings.

  2. God causes others to rejoice in song all around us who have been delivered.

  3. There are songs all around us constantly blessing God for His great salvation. Albert Barnes wrote, "All nature will seem to rejoice over the Christians redemption. Nature is full of songs. The birds of the air; the wind; the running stream; the ocean; …all, to one redeemed, seem to be full of songs. The feeling that we are pardoned fills the universe with melody, and makes the heaven and the earth seem to us to be glad.”

The Bible is very clear there is a connection between our singing praise (and/or crying out) and His deliverance. Songs of deliverance are real instruments of divine grace. Here are a few examples.

  1. In Ps 116:13 David sang, "I shall lift up the cup of salvation and call upon the name of the Lord." Chuck Swindoll said that the term "salvation" actually appears in the Hebrew Bible in the plural—salvations. We would grasp the meaning better if we'd render it "deliverances." The psalmist is expressing praise to God for His abundant and numerous deliverances.

  2. Ps 34:4 "I sought the Lord (in worship), and he answered me and delivered me from fear (everything I was afraid of).

  3. Ps 34:6 "This poor man cried out (weeping), and the Lord heard him, and saved him out of all his troubles.” NKJV

  4. Ps 34:17 "The righteous cry out, and the Lord hears; He delivers them from all their troubles.” BSB

There are too many scriptures to list here emphasizing God delights in delivering us when we cry out in melody. I encourage you to lift your heart cry to the Lord and He will hear you and save you. That pain point that hurts so badly, God will heal. Healing is part of your salvation or deliverance.
